From the perspective of appearance and shape, car keys can be broadly categorized into the following types:
1. Double-Sided Key (Standard Key)
Keys with cuts on both sides. A common type widely used in multiple brands, such as TOY43 、CY24、MAZ24、DWO4、GM39 etc.
2. Groove Key (Laser Key)
Named for grooves cut into the key blank, Mainly subdivided into:
(1) Double External Groove Key (e.g., 4-track external)
Grooves cut into the outer four directions (top-left, bottom-left, top-right, bottom-right) of the key blank. Groove patterns are typically complex, offering higher
security. such as HON66、HU39、HON77、HU58、DAT17 etc.
(2) Double Internal Groove Key (e.g., 4-track internal)
Grooves cut into the inner four directions (top-left, bottom-left, top-right, bottom-right) of the key blank. Requires high precision in depth and angle. Compared to
external groove keys, the wafer or sidebar mechanism inside the lock cylinder is usually more compact. such as TOY48、TOY40、HY22、MAZ23、HON60 etc.
(3) Single External Groove Key (e.g., 2-track External)
Grooves cut only on the outer side of the key blank, with the opposite side being smooth. Such as HU56、HU101、HU64、HU43、GM45 etc.
(4) Single Internal Groove Key (e.g., 2-track Internal)
Features a single groove of constant width cut into the inner side of the key blank. Such as HU66、SIP22、HU83、HU100、KK12, VA2T etc.
3. Specialized Automotive Key Types
(1) Tibbe Key
Cylindrical key shaft with a series of inclined circumferential grooves. Primarily used in FO21 Ford Transit, older Ford Mondeo, and older Jaguar.
(2) Cross Key
The Citroen SX9 key is a prime example.
